Lagos is historically associated with the Portuguese Discoveries, and today it is one of the most attractive tourist centres in the Algarve, with exceptional beaches, golf courses, cultural and religious heritage, as well as highly dynamic nightlife.
From the 15th century; in 1573, it was elevated to a city by King D. Sebastião, becoming the capital of the Kingdom of the Algarve, a position that is maintained during the King Philippine Domain. In 1755, when it was devastated by the tsunami that also devastated Lisbon, the provisional capital moved to Loulé and then to Faro, where it remains.
Nowadays, Lagos is a modern and bustling city that has learned to develop around the tourism industry, encouraged by the attractive beaches and climate, a unique coast (called Costa D'Oiro, due to the almost golden colour of the rocks), gastronomy and historical heritage.
The charming city centre, practically all pedestrian, with wrought-iron balconies, carved stonework and colourful patios, is ideal for a picturesque stroll after a day of rest on the beach or a game of golf, offering a wide range of commercial and cultural establishments, such as restaurants, bars and clubs for nightly entertainment.
Lagos learned to combine their heritage from the past with a series of modern amenities designed to attract visitors, such as the magnificent hotels with stunning views; Palmares Resort ***** with a large natural amphitheater with a panoramic sea view and a harmonious design. The terrain descends slowly from the entrance (70m above sea level), on a gentle slope down the hill that crosses different valleys until ending at A Meia-Praia beach, in the Alvor estuary or in the bay of Lagos creating an exceptional harmony between golf and the ocean.

The kilometres of dunes bathed by calm and arm waters, the natural caves carved into the cliffs by the sea, the proximity to competitive and world-renowned golf courses such as Palmares Golf Course, with three interconnected 9-hole golf courses designed by renowned architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. The course goes down to the ocean, giving all practitioners the opportunity to marvel at the natural beauty and challenge of the 27 holes.
Boavista Golf Course, designed by Howard Swan, it is a challenging course for players, particularly holes 6 and 8 where golfers have to throw the ball over a ravine. Inaugurated in 2002, the design of the course took into account the natural contours of the terrain and made sublime use of the surrounding landscape, providing views of rare beauty over the Bay of Lagos (to the East) and the Serra de Monchique (to the North).
Espiche Golf Course, set within an undulating landscape, the greens and fairways have been carefully placed to balance the simultaneous demands of golfers and the environment, with native plants everywhere to create a beautiful setting and challenging obstacles, making it a unique golf course in the Algarve, it requires careful contemplation along its 5862 meters - from the back tees and technical skill in the short game.
Santo Antonio Golf Course, located near the Costa Vicentina Nature Reserve, framed by a valley that meanders through the countryside creating some undulating fairways, the Santo António golf course is an impressive arena that once hosted the prestigious Europro Tour. Stretches between hills behind the fishing village of Salema, and is located close to Lagos and Sagres. It is a course with some sloping fairways, particularly in the first nine holes. Small greens with bunkers, many lakes close to each other on the second lap, requiring a good degree of accuracy. The Santo António golf course was designed by Pepe Gancedo, one of the most famous architects in Spain, whose construction philosophy involves minimal alteration of the existing terrain. The countryside is perfectly integrated into the landscape.

Here’s what to do in Lagos to round up your days in this fascinating Algarve town.
The sea is a source of rich gastronomy in Lagos, with the most varied dishes of fish, shellfish and seafood. Dumplings dishes, Bulhão Pato clams, fried squid, octopus or razor clam rice, roasted mackerel, roasted sardines, are just some of the many snacks and dishes included in the menu of any restaurant. In meats, the grain stew; the corn stew; pork with clams and broad beans from the Algarve are some examples.
Almond and fig (and even carob) are the main characters in the Algarve sweets. The dumplings made of almond paste with a filling of soft eggs or egg strands are the basis for the most varied fantasies. Don Rodrigo's are also made of almond and eggs, protected by a coloured silver casing. Also, the famous Morgado does not dispense with almonds. The fig, after being dried, whole or crushed, allows a wide variety of uses.
However, and so that all of our tourists feel at home, there is a vast and rich offer of international cuisine, which can be found both in the various restaurants around the city and in the restaurants of the hotels
Shopping in Lagos is one of the most enjoyable things you could do during your trip to the Algarve. The town’s seaside traditions have inspired local artisans for generations, and you’ll find masterful creations throughout its shops. Imaginative boutiques show off ceramics, handicrafts and decorative items crafted by local artists, while clothing stores sell sophisticated pieces of fashion.
Take your time wandering the seafront promenade and explore its traditional markets as well. This is a fantastic opportunity to grasp the local culture of Lagos and the industries that fuel its economy.
It all comes together in Lagos for a shopping experience that appeals to just about any budget.
