Opened in 2002 designed by Howard Swan. The first 9 holes bring the player to the highest point of the course where the views of the Atlantic Ocean and the mountain of Monchique are remarkable.
The back nine are a challenging descent to an area surrounded of water lines and small ponds. Par 3 are strong holes on this golf course, with the long carries special the 6th and the 14th somehow unforgettable. Hole 8 par 5, demand a shot over ravine and on the back nine holes 14, 15 and 17 have lakes that require extra attention. The signature hole is the stunning Par 4, 7th hole lining up your eyes with a panoramic view of the ocean. Also, the up and downs of the layout can fool those that only look at the length of the holes on the score card. The 18th, for instance, 333mt of the yellow’s tees, is an unforgettable uphill monster with a green that you can only see upon arrival.
One of the Algarve’s very first golf courses, “Palmares”, near the popular town of Lagos, has been totally transformed by one of the most prestigious golf courses designer Robert Trent Jones Jr into a stunning 27-hole Golf Course and reopen in 2011. He created a mixture of parkland and links style. It is probably one of the most attractive location of all the golf courses in the Algarve as the views are totally breath-taking.
There are three 9-hole circuits the Alvor Course, the Lagos Course, and the Praia Course. The first nine holes run through woodland to the beach with lovely views of the “ria de Alvor” estuary and the ocean.
The nine of Lagos take the player to the praia Alvor Lagos and spectacular Meia Praia beach and again with stunning views. The Praia course are the links nine holes and they are mainly located on the actual meia praia beach among the sand dunes. The stk 1 is a par 5 of 548 metres parallel to the beach, requiring some good shots to be on the green in regulation.
An old train line running across the beachfront of the golf course adds an unusual charm to this wonderful golf course.
Espiche Golf Course opened in 2012, twenty years after it has been dreamed of. This 18-hole par 72 course designed by Peter Sauerman is not exceptionally long, but it is somehow tricky, with a few blind holes and a longer shot can make your ball disappear into the dense native colourful vegetation that borders a good part of the fairways. Lakes, streams and bunkers are present, to challenge the most off-guard players and to protect the greens.
The hole 10, a Par 5, can be considered the signature hole, as it becomes narrower as you get close to the green. The modern and outstanding Clubhouse, considered in 2015 the most beautiful in Europe, provides panoramic views across the entire course that is inserted in an ecological preservation area, being itself an eco-friendly building.
The Santo Antonio golf Course was designed by Pepe Gancedo, a Spanish architect and open in 1987. Situated near the fishing village of Salema, near Sagres. An undulating course with some sloping fairways, particularly on the front nine. Small well bunkered greens, many protected by lakes on the back nine, requiring a good degree of accuracy. The course is perfectly integrated into the landscape and provides some great views of the surrounding mountains and the sea.
Some memorable holes will delight players of any skill. On the front nine the par 5, 9th ranks among the toughest stroke-index 1 holes ever designed. At 490 meters, the third shot is steeply up hill and over a ravine.
On the second nine of Golf Santo Antonio, the highlight is hole 11 a green protected by small pond and is immediately followed by a par 5 that leads up the “Valley of the Wells” to another well protected green.
The 18th hole, par 4 is indeed a fabulous hole, with an elevated amphitheatre green, finishing right beneath the Clubhouse.
