Portugal golf holidays - Penha Longa Atlantic Championship

Penha Longa Atlantic Championship Sintra, Lisbon

The setting of the course can be considered as unique in comparison with most other courses in Portugal. Located in the parklands of what was originally a very wealthy 14th Century Monastery that has been very carefully restored. No expense appears to have been spared in creating this course and its surroundings that includes a residential development.|The topographical layout of the 18 holes is over gently wooded hills which adds to its overall beauty. The course offers interesting water hazards, some elevated greens and added to this is the challenge of the strong winds that some times occur. This course has to be played with respect for its architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. who has created a golf course that demands skill from the most experienced golfers. The course has hosted the Portuguese Open in 1994, 1995 and 2010 and several important international events. (...)

Portugal golf holidays - Oitavos Dunes

Oitavos Dunes Cascais, Lisbon

Oitavos Dunes Golf Course, par 71, designed by the renowned Arthur Hills, opened in 2001. It is located in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, creating stunning mountain and ocean views. Arthur Hills maintained the natural characteristics of the land in this clever design and the golf course name reflects its natural sand dunes. Oitavos Dunes is truely a great golf course. There are a few trees, dunes and bunkers to avoid. Oitavos Dunes was the first golf course in Europe to receive the Audobon Gold Certificate, the top environmental certification. Oitavos Golf course is a mixture of parkland and links in some parts with rolling fairways. The greens are large and some have an unusual roll to them due to the grain line. Oitavos Dunes has an excellent practice area with two putting greens, short game facility and driving range. The golf course is certainly one of the best in mainland Europe and set to be one of the best in the world.  (...)

Portugal golf holidays - Quinta da Marinha

Quinta da Marinha Cascais, Lisbon

Located on the famous Estoril Coast, 25 kilometers from Lisbon, the Quinta da Marinha course was designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones and is set in a private estate of 110 hectares, wooded with pine trees. The architect has worked on the flat terrain, laying out the course over 5870 metres for a Par 71. The most spectacular hole on this course is hole number 3, a Par 4 of 334 metres sloping down towards the sea. Once on the green, the golfer has the Atlantic Ocean as background. The whole of Quinta da Marinha's course is surrounded by beautiful panoramic views. The following hole (a Par 3) requires a very precise shot for the ball to cross a cliff and reach a wide but not very deep green. For most of the course, however, the fairways face inland with the beautiful outline of the Sintra mountain range forming their background. Many bunkers and a number of lakes make the player's task even more difficult. Hole number 10, for instance, has a green entirely surrounded by water. (...)

Portugal golf holidays - Golf Estoril

Golf Estoril Estoril, Lisbon

Estoril Golf Club dates back to 1929 in its first nine-hole version and it was built by Fausto de Figueiredo, the gambling concessionaire at the Estoril Casino. In the new design, the former 9th hole disappeared, and an alteration was made to the fairway of the 13th hole - the famous Patiño’s hole - that now has a dogleg to the right and the second shot is played from the area where the old green was located. The green is now on a higher level. With the disappearance of the 9th hole it was necessary to build another hole, which is now number 13, a par 3 of 160 metros in length.|Finally, the 16th hole has a re-designed green but it is still a par 3, 186 metres long, but 15 metres shorter than the previous one, and it is considered by many players to be one of the best holes in Portugal. (...)
